All's well that ends well ...

Are you the kind of person who always thinks the bottle is half full rather than half empty? Do you tend to look on the bright side of things? If hopefully the answer to these two simple questions is a hearty yes, then you're a true optimist.

So the obvious follow-up question is: What are you optimistic about? Is it your personal future - whether you're still studying a degree, already working but aspiring to a better job or, sadly, a newly unemployed person looking for work? Or is it a global issue perhaps, like the end of the ongoing economic crisis or a greener future of our troubled, ailing planet?

Hey folks, whatever the ideas, post your comments below. It will be so uplifting to read how gleefully optimistic you feel about the future!

I see .. some of you must be thinking "how about you, dear teacher?" Well, I'm optimistic that one day all the films in Spain's cinemas will be shown in their original version, no matter which language they were shot in and ... OK OK, I get it, enough of this lecturing of mine about the sheer joy of watching the cast act their roles on the big screen in their mother tongue, let alone the benefits you guys gain in terms of language learning. I just can't help it, he he!

  1. Optimistic or pessimistic?

I think sometimes it depends on the moment, one the one hand you feel like you can handle everything, but on the other hand, you think you shouldn’t have got out of the bed that morning.

Anyway, now is a good moment to be optimistic.

I expect to finish my degree in two years’ time from now, and I guess the current crisis will finish by that time. (Maybe this is a quite optimist aim, but it’s better to see the bottle half full rather than half empty, isn’t it?)

I think in a few years, ideally two, just after having finish my degree, I’ll be living independently, and hopefully in another country, to be able to improve other languages.

I’m sure these dreams will become true sooner or later, but they’ll be!

  2. Well, to keep on going in life and be on top of the moon, my personal priority is my Primary children students. I just remember my motto: Do it for them.

  3. I feel that it is possible - and absolutely necessary - to find some positive points in the middle of this rough crisis. For instance, we are going to be less consumerist , which will be favourable to the environment and consequently to ourselves. New green energies will be used so that our planet is going to become a healthier place, where people will be more caring. We will recover our love for Nature, living in the countryside, and farming practices will no longer be considered (as) an arduous task and we will know how to appreciate the little important things.

Finally, I am really optimistic as regards scientific research, above all in the field of medicine. In the near future, the cure for many incurable illnesses will have been found. The latest research in stem cells offers us some hope which would have been unthinkable some few years ago.

  4. "....Always look on the bright side of life.."(singing or whistling) This is one of my favourite songs and besides, it is my way of thinking..
Personally I believe that positive thinking attracts positive things and that things that make you feel happy also make you think more positively...and so on...like a " hapinness wheel"!

Now I hope and expect the new events in my life turn out well, and I look towards the future with a smile. But that doesn't mean I just wait for the future to come, in the meantime I am enjoying the present!!

  5. I'm a pretty optimistic person. This doesn't mean I think nothing bad can happen. In fact, I know that things don't often go our way. But at any rate, I tend to expect things will turn out well.
That's why right now, I'm very optimistic that the weather will improve, and it will stop raining over the weekend. Next Sunday I'm going to do trekking in the mountains, and it would be great to have a dry, sunny day for walking.
Broadly, I'm optimistic about the future of our country. I'm sure we will soon overcome this economic downturn and the unemployment rate will decrease, since Spain is full of hard-working people who don't give up easily.

  6. I have always thought that you just have to be in the right place at the right time. Many people wonder when that time will come. I don’t know either and, as I don't know if I am looking in the wrong place, or if I should wait.

Despite being a patient person, sometime ago, I decided to devote myself to 'notice' happy people, or at least people that would be happy, to discover the reason for their happiness, and this is what discovered: The key is to face the endless challenges on your journey, step by step, to reach your goals, always with a positive attitude, you know, JUST DO IT!

I only hope this piece of advice will be helpful for all of you guys.

And remember, today is the first day of the rest of your life, so please enjoy it!

  7. I always considered myself as a pessimistic person, I always looked the bottle half empty; for example, if I know that an exam is going to be difficult I tend to think that I’m going to fail it. But as Clara said: “…positive thinking attracts positive things”, I realized that also negative thoughts attract negative results. So, I recently started to look the bright side of things but it´s a hard work, I must confess.

I´m a student so my priority is to finish my degree and I’m optimistic that I will finish it and I will work in what I like and in Spain, but I don´t feel pretty much optimistic about the future in this country by the time I finish my studies. But I will try to see it as a goal to achieve in order to gain more background in learning languages and prepare for my future career.

  8. Optimism is an attitude.I fact, it is the tendency to look on the more favourable side of events.I completely agree with this definition because Iam certainly a good-nature and optimistic person, I always focus on my goals and tend not to feel frustrated if I cannot achive them.Hence, accept our errors inplies update regularly our thoughts about future as our own circustancies change.I frequently inclined in pushing barriers and try to solve the unexpected facts that life brings to me.
On the other hand,I usually help others than reprove them , this significant attitude allows me see the narrow paths as wide fields, inded.

  9. You only live once…so…why so serious or negative? We can’t spend our whole life thinking that the bottle is half empty, because we wont’ realize that the are too many little things that together are stronger than the negative part.

This year I’ll finish my degree and I know (because I’m realistic, not negative!) that it will be very difficult to find a job related to my studies, but I can look for a job to earn money and pay a master, or maybe move to a foreign country and learn a new language or improve my English.

Anyway, I know that the crisis has been really hard for everyone but, on the other hand I think that nowadays the society is developing a new conscience and we are becoming more supportive and we participate in many volunteers programs. Lots of people have a “critical thinking” which is important to manage our life, and the politic life too.

  10. - Optimism?
    - Yes, please. Where do they sell it?
    - No, no. It is a seed you have within yourself. You only have to water it every day, every single second of your life.
    - But, how can I do it?
    - Here you are the magical pill: "always look for the positive side of everything", because as Pablo Neruda says, "they may cut the flowers, but they may not stop the spring".

    1. Hey, who wrote this funny little dialogue with the famous final quote by the great Pablo Neruda, I wonder? Actually, I need to reword it a bit, dear anonymous friend, as what Neruda actually said was: You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming"
No big deal. I'm delighted, folks, so keep posting your comments!

  11. I'm quite a pessimist, but it's true that I've calmed over the years. Life often shows that everything can change in a minute, so we must take each situation as it comes and try to adapt to the local enviroment. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that nothing is as it seems. When something is apparently adverse maybe we are not considering other factors, it can avoid worse things or simply be a step before a beneficial circumstance. I understand people who think that we should live each day as it were the last one, however, as far as I'm concerned, time and patience are excellent advisers. Thank you, Meme, for giving us some hope, reading your words is really comforting! I won't finish with the admirable Neruda, but with someone more eccentric: Marilyn Monroe said “I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” Don't you agree?

  12. I tend to be realistic so most of the times I see things the ways they are, some people may think I'm a pessimist but in fact I am not. It's just that I deal with the problem (if it exists at all) and then I try to solve it.
So, for example, nowadays I'm very optimistic about my personal life and about my standard of living. This small city is just what I want and it's perfect to raise children, its rates of security are really high, you can go almost everywhere on foot and feel secure and if you compare prices - rent, food- it's cheaper than other European countries, so I'm really thankful for that.

  13. I´ve read somewhere that ít´s not the strongest of the species the one that survives, if not the another one which adapt to change better. I coudn´t agree more with this sentence and I strongly believe that the attitude we have is tremendously important, because it has relevant repercusions on our lives.

I´m realistic that currently pessimism prevails in our society because of economic crisis and that thinking about the future fills people with uncertainty. I have no doubt that lack of money makes people unhappy and I do consider that these days are hell on earth for a large number of people.

However, on second thoughts I´m positive that financial crisis has some advantages: firstly because money problems will make people aware of the importance of valuing everything they have, secondly because we´re learning to live without squandering money and finally because we might fell the public things as if they were ours.
As the saying goes ´every cloud has a silver lining´.

Anyway, I´m optimistic about this is a non-permanent situation and crisis will finish before long.
So remain optimistic because despair will get you nowhere!

  14. I am an optimistic person but also realistic. Being honest, I don´t like to take many risks in my life, but I don´t attempt to control everything. We´re living a tough time where the future is uncertain but I trust in humans and I tend to think human being is good (providing that he´s not a banker or politician...).
I am optimistic that one day people will value artistic jobs, culture will reach throughout society and I won´t need to explain everyone that music is not just a hobby: -"Oh, do you play the violin? what nice!"- and the elegant lady imagine me playing a romantic song with a flower in my hair...

  15. I’m optimistic about…well, I’m not going to cheat you, I’m not optimistic at all, but I think that it is because I tend to think a lot about everything, and as more I think, as more problems I find. I know this is a thing that I should change; I should switch on the optimistic side of my mind because by being optimistic you encourage to do more things, so I will try to change, I swear. But, hey! Being pessimistic is not such a horrible issue, because if things go better than you thought they would be, you might finally feel happier, so don’t judge me :P

  16. I’m optimistic that myself. We are all wondering about the world, people who are living in, the environment, the economic situation in Spain nowadays, and so on. But, folks, think a moment about this: it’s better, in order to improve something around us, to pay attention to our inside, isn’t it?

We must learn to be much more self-confident, I mean, if we think we’re going to achieve something, surely this thing is going to happen successfully. You know, we have to believe we are the best so that we become the best one – obviously, we always have to keep our humility. How are we going to change the world if we can’t change our mind to have a kind soul? Do you want a life without lies? Don’t lie. Do you want a lovely and peaceful place to live? Love someone and live in harmony with others.

It’s not too much difficult: the goal is the confidence, only believe in ourselves. Before changing the world, change your mind. I can say: “we can get further things, taking little steps”.

  17. “Life Is Beautiful” it’s my feeling so I’m optimistic, “I always look on the bright side on life” as Clara says and everyday find lots of small or tiny things that make me to say I am happy, when somebody smiles me, or says me thanks, or my family tell me a good new or show their love to each other.
I have a big family and they will be successful in their lives because they are improving their flair making a grand effort and the most important they will have happiness.
Nowadays, our country is suffering a crisis but the longest night will have an end though desperate cuts have desperate cures so it will be going better.
